πΎ Celebrate National Dog Day in Macomb County: 10 Ways to Make It Pawsome!
National Dog Day is Wednesday, August 26, 2026! Whether your family's best friend is a tiny pup, a giant couch hippo, a goofy mixed breed, or a beloved senior dog, this is the perfect excuse to give them a little extra attention.
National Dog Day has been celebrated every August 26 since it was founded in 2004 by animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige. The day celebrates all dogs — mixed breeds and purebreds — while also bringing attention to dogs waiting in shelters and rescues for homes.
Here in Macomb County, there are plenty of ways families can get in on the fun!
π 1. Head to a Local Dog Park
Give your pup a chance to stretch those legs, sniff approximately 4,000 things and make a few new friends.
A few Macomb County-area options include:
Stony Creek Dog Park — Washington Township
Located inside Stony Creek Metropark at the Oakgrove Picnic Area, this is a great option for families looking for a spacious off-leash adventure.
Pitchford Park — Macomb Township
Pitchford Park includes separate fenced areas for large and small dogs. The dog park requires a Macomb Township Dog Park Membership, so make sure you're registered before heading over.
Civic Center Park-Dog Park — Clinton Township
Another fenced, off-leash option for some National Dog Day playtime. Membership and documentation are required for entry.
Behnke Memorial Dog Park — Mount Clemens
This public off-leash dog park gives pups plenty of room to burn some energy.
Always check current park rules, requirements and hours before visiting.
𦴠2. Let Your Dog Pick Out a Treat
Take your pup on a little shopping date and let them sniff out a special treat, toy or chew.
You can even make it a "dog's choice" outing: hold up two toys and see which one your pup chooses!

πΈ 3. Have a Doggy Photo Shoot
Grab the kids, your pup and your phone and head outside for a mini National Dog Day photo shoot.
Try taking photos of:
πΎ Your child and dog together
πΎ Your dog wearing a bandana
πΎ A close-up of those adorable puppy eyes
πΎ Your dog's paw in your child's hand
πΎ Your pup doing their favorite trick
πΎ A family photo that includes your four-legged family member
Macaroni KID idea: Ask your child to make a little "National Dog Day" sign to hold in the picture!
πΆ 4. Help a Macomb County Shelter or Rescue
You don't have to adopt a dog to make National Dog Day meaningful.
Consider donating supplies, making a monetary donation, volunteering where age requirements allow or checking a rescue's current wish list.
Local organizations include:
Macomb County Animal Control — Clinton Township
The county shelter provides animal control services and houses adoptable pets.
Humane Society of Macomb — Shelby Township
This independent nonprofit provides adoption and other animal welfare services and relies on volunteers to help with many shelter operations.
Detroit Animal Welfare Group — Macomb County/Romeo area
DAWG is a volunteer-driven rescue that helps animals in need and accepts a variety of donated supplies.
ReJoyceful Animal Rescue — Clinton Township
Another local rescue where families can learn about adoption, fostering and ways to support animals in need.
National Dog Day's mission specifically encourages people to recognize the dogs that need rescuing each year, making August 26 a great day to introduce kids to the idea of helping animals in their own community.
β€οΈ 5. Make a Donation as a Family
Turn National Dog Day into a simple lesson in giving back.
Give your kids a budget — even $5 or $10 — and let them shop for something a shelter needs.
Think:
- Dog food
- Treats
- Leashes
- Puppy pads
- Cleaning supplies
- Dog beds
- Crates
- Toys
Check with the organization first because shelter wish lists and donation policies can change.
πͺ 6. Make Homemade Dog Treats
Kids love getting into the kitchen, and this time the taste tester can be the family dog!
Look for a simple dog-safe recipe using ingredients your pup already tolerates, such as pumpkin, oats or peanut butter.
Important: If using peanut butter, check the ingredient list and make sure it does not contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.
πΆ 7. Take an Extra-Long Sniff Walk
Sometimes the best present costs absolutely nothing.
Instead of rushing through your normal walk, let your dog lead the way. Give them extra time to sniff, explore and investigate.
For dogs, all that sniffing isn't wasting time — it's part of the adventure!
π¦ 8. Have a Backyard Dog Party
Invite a few dog-loving friends or neighbors over for a simple National Dog Day celebration.
Set up:
π A kiddie pool or sprinkler
𦴠Dog treats
πΎ Balls and toys
πΈ A photo station
π§ Plenty of fresh water
π¦ Frozen dog-friendly treats
The kids can even make "Best Tail Wagger," "Best Trick" and "Cutest Ears" awards — just make sure every dog wins something.
π 9. Consider Fostering or Adopting
If your family has already been thinking seriously about adding a dog, National Dog Day can be a great time to check local shelters and rescues.
But remember: a dog is a long-term family commitment!
National Dog Day encourages prospective pet parents to consider adoption, including mixed breeds, purebreds and dogs of every size and background.
Spend time researching the dog's personality, energy level, grooming needs, training requirements and expected costs to find the right fit for your family.
π 10. Celebrate the Dog You Already Love
National Dog Day doesn't have to involve a big outing.
Your dog's perfect day might simply be:
An extra belly rub.
A ride in the car.
A new tennis ball.
A longer walk.
A special treat.
A nap next to their favorite human.
Because while we might celebrate them officially one day a year, our dogs have a pretty amazing way of making ordinary days better.
πΎ Happy National Dog Day, Macomb County!
Whether you're hitting a local dog park, donating to a Macomb County rescue, spoiling your pup with a new toy or simply spending a little extra time together, August 26 is all about celebrating the dogs who make our families complete.
And if your family doesn't have a dog? That's okay! Consider using National Dog Day as an opportunity to help one who's still waiting for a family of their own.
We'd love to see your Macomb County pups! πΆβ€οΈ Share a photo of your family's dog and tell us their name, age and favorite thing to do. There are several ways to share!
